The birth of Lok Satta Party

Citizens of India,
The Lok Satta Party was launched on October 2nd 2006.Lok Satta the NGO accomplished a great deal in its nine years of existence. But the changes required to really transform India are possible only when the 'powers that be' have the will to implement the logical and practical solutions proposed.Unfortunately, they either don't want to or cannot afford to.Hence arose the need to form a political party of the people.

We present below, the Preamble of the Constitution of the Lok Satta Party.

'Indian people have enjoyed, over the past fifty six years, the fruits of a liberal and noble Constitution given to us by the generation that fought for freedom. The foundations of our democracy are strong and durable and our liberties are genuine.

However, the bulk of the people still suffer from the burdens of discrimination by birth and inadequate opportunities and their potential remains unfulfilled. Avoidable suffering is the lot of the majority of our people. The young people who today constitute a vast majority of India, have hardly any place in our public affairs. Our antiquated political culture does not suit the aspirations of the new generation which is unburdened by the baggage of the past and is rearing to conquer the future.

Politics has increasingly become the preserve of a new class of entrepreneurs abusing public office for private gain. Excessive centralization, ineffective instruments of rule of law, marginalization of citizens in governance, autocratic political parties and unaccountable exercise of power have led to a perverse political culture and pervasive corruption. In our power-centered politics women continue to be marginalized. The disadvantaged sections who need high quality and reliable public services most, have no real power to determine the priorities of government or improve the outcomes. The middle classes, who should constitute the vanguard of a democratic polity, are increasingly alienated from the political process.

The need of the hour is to foster a new political culture and to create a new political formation for the new generation. The new political culture should be founded in our own liberal traditions and Constitutional values. These values should find expression in a member-controlled, democratic, transparent political process. There must be a harmonious reconciliation between the imperatives of rapid economic growth and the need for social justice and equal opportunities to all. Liberty and human dignity should be preserved and promoted at all costs and the citizen should be at the heart of the political process in the twenty first century.

In the twenty first century we need to build a society completely free from all forms of discrimination by birth and all vestiges of the pernicious caste system. All power should vest with the citizen and governance should be decentralized and restructured, based on the principles of citizen sovereignty and subsidiarity.

Corruption and private gain at public cost must be things of the past and all processes of governance should be transparent and accountable. The state needs to focus on creating conditions for peace and order, opportunities for fulfilling human potential and preventing avoidable suffering and wholesome and sustainable economic growth coupled with social justice. Politics must once again become a moral endeavour promoting human happiness and harmony.

It is with this vision and with a view to rejuvenate our republic and promote inclusive politics and reasoned public discourse that we, like-minded citizens of India, have decided to come together and form a new political formation - Lok Satta Party.'

We urge each and every Indian citizen to watch and gauge us by our actions.Pessimism is expected, afterall,it is a result of the pandemic rot in our political system. We are but a manifestation of your desire for a change. JOIN US!

  2. Dear Loksatta

    Just one quick question.
Do you really need the caste categorisation (OC, BC, SC, ST) on your membership form?

OK, if you think that realistically it is the only way to monitor equal opportunities in present Indian society, then please consider leaving two more options there saying: (1) I don’t want to reveal (2) I don’t belong to any of these.
I guess further discussion and a clear stance about this issue is expected from the party if it wants to embrace all liberal and educated people.

I hope I made some sense.

    Thank you

  3. Dear Mr.Siva Reddy,
You have a very valid point there. We will definitely consider the inclusion of the options you mentioned, especially the first one.

Caste categorisation is a reality in our society. As a party which believes in equal opportunities for all segments of society, we need to have an idea about the composition/profile of our members.Agreed,it may not give the right impression at first, but as a party we have to be pragmatic and alive to ground realities.

    Dear Honish,
The fact is that Lok Satta Party needs an accurate picture of the profile of its membership base. All we are trying to do is provide equal opportunities in our Party, the same way our constitution tries to do for the citizens of the country.

We hope we got our view across.

Please keep in touch Mr.Siva Reddy and Mr.Honish!

  4. Dear Lok Satta,

Thanks for clarifying the point raised and for considering my suggestions. I hope the liberals will understand the need for that question (about social group) in membership form at least at this juncture. At the same time, I wish there will be a day in future soon when such a question is no more needed.

I would like to do some more suggestions.

Please try to involve NRIs in the party not only for moral support but also for financial support. As you know millions of NRIs donate to different charity organisations some on regular basis and some as and when the need arises (e.g. natural calamities). Mostly they donate to organisations involved in providing education, health, employment and other sorts of help to the needy people directly. However, impact of good governance, electoral reforms and corruption control, on raising the standards of the poor is going to be enormous. If convinced, many NRIs would come forward to support the cause of Lok Satta although they cannot participate directly in the electoral process. I suggest creating an NRI cell in the party. I know there is FDRI for the interested people to donate. However creating an NRI cell and membership would encourage people further. And the process needs to be simplified. In other words ‘getting membership’ and ‘making donations’ should be only a few clicks away. I mean online application forms and credit card and direct debit payments. This would be good for the netizens in India as well. As you know, apathy is dominating the majority of Indians (wherever they are) and anything less than simplistic will be rejected conveniently.

I hope I made some sense.

    Thank you

  5. Dear Mr.Siva Reddy,
Thank you for your suggestions. You will be glad to know that we will soon have an online payment facility on our website.

There are a few rules and guidelines we are required to follow when donations are from outside the country. All rules will be followed strictly and all those who believe in our mission can,as you said, help us with just a few clicks!

We are aware of the large number of NRI's who would like to work for the Party.Your suggestions point us in the right direction. You may rest assured that all that you have suggested have already been considered and are in various stages of consideration or implementation.

We are glad to note that you are a regular contributor to our blogs.

Do keep us in the loop on your views and perspectives.

    Warm wishes

  6. Dear Honish,
Kindly have a look at the Party Constitution for membership details.Do not miss the details on Active membership given under the section 'Rules and Regulations.'

You may post your form along with the prescribed fee to us.As you rightly asked, you may not be able to contribute to the extent an active member is expected to contribute, as you stay outside A.P.

Once you are clear about membership and its requirements,it is for you to decide what suits you best.

We hope to see your name on the membership list very soon!

    With warm wishes

  14. Hi Loksatta,
I want to be part of this vision. Always dreamt about corruption free nation. I’m working for Dell International Service Ltd. I was vice president of ABVP student wing in my college; need to quit the party because of their ideas. I want to serve our nation and humanity. And I feel this would be great platform.
Can you please guide me, how to be part of this vision. And please send me the time table of the party activities.

  15. Hi Dear lok satta,
I was going through all the comments posted and savoured most of them. Like Honish, Shiva Reddy and Yansu I also concur with your vision of a nation free of corruption, poverty, inequality in all aspects and ultimate power for the electorate. I always beleived after long hours of deliberation with my friends that the political system cannot be perfect and it is the people in the system who need to be moral and commited to the objectives of the constitution and not try to manipulate the loop holes. I think I am talking on behalf of majority when I say that most of the present politicians lack the above mentioned qualities. In what all I know about Lok Satta, I felt that its my party and this is what I hvae been looking for. I am 23 and I have never voted. I will be glad to do all that is needed to cast my vote to Lok satta should it contest.

I have a bunch of friends who are so sure that the fate of this country is tied to the politicians and one or two instaces of reform cannot bring us out of the vicious cycle. And I tell them that if we cannot do a simple thing like supporting a genuine effort with a vision that we share, we have no right to moan about the country and its situation.

Having said all this, I will do all I can and wait for the vision to materialize. I will join Lok Satta.
